چکیده

The last twenty years has seen increases in nonprofessional sportspersons using anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS). Although some women use AAS, most users are men. Few studies examine men, masculinities and AAS. Of the limited available, many link a ‘hegemonic masculinity’ with men’s AAS use; adopting singular identity perspective generalizing ‘steroid use.’ However, bodybuilding is diverse, often encompassing different goals surrounding muscularity, size, weight appearance – thus, identities unlikely to be singular. This research questions narrow perspectives, developing an in-depth investigation that recognizes can complex depict multiple performance-enhancing drugs usage routines. study conducted detailed thematic-content analysis of 351 user-postings from eight pro-AAS online discussion boards linkages between understandings masculinity, male physicality, how conceptualizations influence trends for Research applied R.W Connell’s hegemonic masculinity as theoretical lens interpret findings. Findings uncovered diverse notions linked three distinct connecting practices (The Nattys, Cyclers, Blasters-and-cruisers). An interactions presented discussed, alongside implications theory further this emerging but important field.

Anabolic androgenic steroid-induced hepatotoxicity.

Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) have been abused for decades by both professional and amateur athletes in order to improve physical performance or muscle mass. AAS abuse can cause adverse effects, among which are hepatotoxic effects. These effects include cholestatic icterus and possibly peliosis hepatis and hepatocellular carcinoma or adenoma. In particular, 17α-alkylated AAS appear to be h...

Homocysteine induced cardiovascular events: a consequence of long term anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) abuse.

OBJECTIVES The long term effects (>20 years) of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use on plasma concentrations of homocysteine (HCY), folate, testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), free androgen index, urea, creatinine, haematocrit (HCT), vitamin B12, and urinary testosterone/epitestosterone (T/E) ratio, were examined in a cohort of self-prescribing bodybuilders. METHODS Subjects ...

Illicit anabolic-androgenic steroid use.

The anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are a family of hormones that includes testosterone and its derivatives. These substances have been used by elite athletes since the 1950s, but they did not become widespread drugs of abuse in the general population until the 1980s. Thus, knowledge of the medical and behavioral effects of illicit AAS use is still evolving. Surveys suggest that many million...

Anabolic Androgenic Steroid (AAS) Related Deaths: Autoptic, Histopathological and Toxicological Findings

Anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) represent a large group of synthetic derivatives of testosterone, produced to maximize anabolic effects and minimize the androgenic ones. AAS can be administered orally, parenterally by intramuscular injection and transdermally. Androgens act by binding to the nuclear androgen receptor (AR) in the cytoplasm and then translocate into the nucleus. This binding ...
